A LOW-COST airline has expanded its routes to connect smaller US cities.
The budget airline is currently offering a promotion with $30 off flights.
Avelo Airlines is set to add 10 new routes to its ever-growing map on May 1st.
The new airline focuses on “emphasizing reliability, low fares and unique routes connecting smaller cities.”
CEO Andrew Levy spoke to Business Insider about Avelo and what customers can expect on board.
“We still have the lowest cost structure in the U.S. airline industry, and that’s actually because of the way we designed the company,” he explained.
“We go to these secondary airports that are cheaper to operate in and out of.”
The 10 new destinations include Albany, Atlanta, Concord Airport near Charlotte, Houston Hobby, Knoxville, St. Louis and Traverse City, Michigan.
Three destinations in Florida have also been added to the schedule: Destin, Lakeland in Central Florida and Miami.
Avelo focuses on providing underserved nonstop routes primarily to secondary markets with little competition.
The airline is unique in providing routes to and from New Haven, connecting travelers to the neighboring cities of Boston and New York.
Its new Lakeland destination will provide travelers with easy access to tourist attractions like Universal Studios in Orlando.
Despite numerous challenges in the airline’s three-year lifespan, including supply issues, rising oil prices and pilot shortages, Levy emphasized his continued focus on reliability.
“It’s in our DNA, it’s part of who we wanted to be when we launched the company and it’s part of who we are as we run it,” he said.
At the end of 2023, Avelo was the top U.S. carrier by cancellation rate and second by on-time performance, according to market research firm Anuvu.
It currently ranks above popular competitor Jet Blue in both categories.
Avelo spokesperson Jim Olson reflected on the company’s rapid growth.
Since the airline’s first flight from Burbank, California, to Sonoma County in the state’s northern wine country, it has expanded its network to 77 routes in 52 destinations.
With smaller and less complex operations than its competitors, Avelo has managed to maintain an impressively low cancellation rate of 0.13%.
PRICE
It also boasted the lowest cost structure in the US airline industry as of 2023.
Its average total fare was $106, about $10 less than the second-lowest fare airline, Frontier.
The current U.S. industry average rate is $227.
Passengers pay US$15 for priority boarding, between US$11 and US$64 for an advance seat assignment with more legroom and US$125 for a pet in the cabin.
Levy said he has “no doubt” that customers want to pay less for bags.
Avelo passengers pay between $37 and $47 for checked luggage, between $40 and $50 for carry-on luggage, and a $100 fee if the checked bag weighs more than 50 pounds.
The company is currently offering $30 off all round-trip flights between May 1 and July 31.
This promotion ends at 11:59 pm PT on April 30th.
To take advantage now, use the promotional code “3YEARS” when searching for flights on Avelo website to see the discount automatically applied to rates.
