SITTING in the middle seat on a flight doesn’t mean you’ll have both armrests, research has found.

Flying and passing through an airport is a place where the rules and etiquette are completely different from life outside of it.

An airport bar is the perfect place for a beer at 7am, despite it being frowned upon in normal life.

But one controversial area where the etiquette debate rages is whether the person in the middle seat on a plane has both armrests on either side.

A survey found that there is no general agreement among travelers that the worst aisle seat should have both armrests.

Stuck between two strangers, without much space and with only a view of the back of the seat and the back of the head in front of you.

The window seat gets the view and control from the sunshade, while the aisle seat has more room for the passenger to stretch their legs and stand up whenever they want.

A 2023 survey by ticket seller Kayak found that only 43% of air travelers think the middle aisle gets both armrests.

However, it found that 57% of flyers thought this was not the case.

One flyer, Joe Shulz, 38, said USA today who flies two or three times a month and agreed with the majority.

He said he saw the armrests less as a place to put your arm and more as a physical barrier between the flyers.

“Regardless of whether you chose to sit in the middle, I don’t think you are entitled to the armrest,” he said.

“As soon as the person in the middle puts their arms on the armrests, you get elbowed.”

Meanwhile, passenger Ryan Gregg, 49, said middle seats should have both armrests as a matter of common courtesy.

He said, “It’s the only thing you get for being stuck there.”

Behavior specialist Judi James previously told Sun Online Travel that the armrest no man’s land is a battle that will never end, because the battle for space is embedded in us as human beings.

She said: “Space is something that humans and animals fight wars over – it’s the most inflammatory thing.

“That’s why people whose garden wall is half an inch to the right can fight with their neighbors for years. We can’t help being territorial.

“We have even taken personal ownership of things that don’t really belong to us, like our office chair or our airplane seat. It brings out the warrior in us.”

Economy airline launches plane without middle seats

AN AIRLINE has ditched the dreaded middle seat on several of its flights – and even offered some complimentary drinks.

Most passengers avoid the middle seat, with the cramped section abandoned in favor of the aisle or window.

However, a low-cost airline has launched several flights where you no longer have to worry about getting stuck on them.

Canadian Porter Airlines uses Embraer E195-E2 planes, which operate in two-by-two seating.

This means you only have to choose between the aisle or window seat.

And despite being a budget airline, it includes a series of extras that other people usually charge for.

This includes free beer and wine, as well as snacks and Wi-Fi.

If you pay extra, you can get extra legroom, carry-on luggage, two checked bags, Wi-Fi, and cocktails.

New flights launched from Toronto to San Francisco, LA and Florida.
