A flight attendant has revealed the common complaint that crew are tired of hearing on planes.

Although flight attendants are trained to handle passenger complaints, there is one request that they secretly find irritating.

Heather Poole, a flight attendant for 28 years, said CNN that travelers often complain about a broken entertainment system, lack of Wi-Fi and reclined seats.

To recline or not to recline has long been a debate, with some altercations getting so heated that the crew has to intervene.

While reclining may be within your rights, some may be upset by the lack of space on already cramped planes.

A passenger was caught punching the front seat after a fight over the recline.

It doesn’t help that airplane seats seem to be getting smaller and smaller, leaving less room to stretch out during the flight.

But Poole said asking flight attendants for help may be fruitless, as there is “nothing” they can do about the reclined seats.

She said: “A recliner can recline and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

“If you kick the seat or threaten to punch someone in the face, you will be the one who will be removed from the flight – not the person who moved the seat back two inches.”

Poole added that if you recline your seat, it’s courteous to do so slowly and be mindful of people behind to avoid broken laptops.

But it is not necessary for recliners to get permission from other passengers before reclining the backrest.

What NOT to wear on the plane

She said: “I think some passengers need to relax – people have the right to recline their seats.

“No one needs to ask permission to recline the seat.”

But there are situations in which it is necessary to keep the seat in an upright position – during takeoff, landing and meal service.

Poole believes that the anger that passengers feel towards each other is misdirected and that the central problem is that airlines squeeze too many seats onto flights.

Poole added: “Really, this is not a war on reclined seats. It’s about space, and most airlines offer the option to buy more space.”

Meanwhile, airlines may be making seats more uncomfortable to encourage travelers to spend more money.

Flyers Rights says the width of a standard economy seat in America has shrunk from an average of 18.5 inches to just 17 since the early 2000s.

One report even warned that planes are being turned into death traps as they reduce legroom and may not provide adequate space for evacuation.

Reclined seats could also become an issue as airlines are quietly scrapping this controversial feature.

Low-cost airlines scrapped the option for passengers to return their seats years ago, with Ryanair abandoning the option in 2004.

But other airlines that offer longer flights and where sleeping is mandatory are also quietly removing the feature.

Reclining seats require more complex mechanisms that allow the backrest to move, which can result in more issues and problems when it breaks.

And without these extra mechanisms, the seats are often lighter – making the plane also lighter, being able to accommodate more seats or consume less fuel.

And if you’re on a plane with reclining seats, an airplane expert has revealed the magic phrase you can use to stop people from reclining in front of you in the meantime.
