A wrong fare is essentially an error that occurs when airlines or travel agents accidentally list the wrong price for a flight.

This can happen when airline staff accidentally omit a zero — or two — when listing the ticket cost online.

They may also use a wrong far code to display prices, allowing travelers to get reduced fares.

It could also be a system failure or a software failure.

Zach Griff, senior reporter for The Point Guys, said HuffPost: “Error fares happen when airlines incorrectly report the price of a particular flight.

“One of the wrong fares I recently encountered was a $700 round-trip first class ticket on Air France from Algeria to New York. This ticket typically sells for over $10,000, so it’s pretty clear something was wrong with the price.”

The expert added: “Wrong fares can happen for a number of reasons, but some of the most common reasons are currency conversion errors with travel agencies incorrectly converting the fare into local currency.

“It could also be errors by revenue management analysts who potentially miss a single digit when entering a fare or write a fare for business class at the economy price.”

Although the chances of airlines issuing “wrong fares” are quite low, such incidents do occur from time to time – and travelers can save hundreds of pounds just by being vigilant.

However, they will have to be quick as airlines will try to remove these fees as quickly as possible as soon as they spot them.

Meanwhile, a woman has revealed a sneaky way to save hundreds of pounds on flights – even after booking them.

Taking to FAR AWAYthe saver said passengers can book cheaper flights on deal tracking service Going.com.

The booking site compares hundreds of fares to find the best prices.

It can also detect when an airline has made a mistake and posted prices at the wrong price.

Although these cases are rare, they happen more than you might think.

Previously, it detected several erroneous fares – including return flights between New York and Paris for $230 (£189) and from Seattle to Tokyo for $316 (£260).

Turns out a savvy flyer has shown travelers how to minimize the damage to their wallets as fees to check their luggage rise.

Passengers could save money by purchasing upgraded tickets, the expert said.

Other ways to save on your next flight

FOLLOWING these expert tips can save you hundreds of dollars when booking a plane ticket.

Be flexible: The travel company emphasized the importance of flexibility – saying that adjusting travel dates can offer a variety of cost-saving options.

You may choose to travel during less popular travel days, such as non-school holidays, or during off-peak and somewhat hectic times.

Consider last-minute deals: While it’s generally recommended to book in advance to avoid disappointment, last-minute deals can also offer savings.

During low season, travelers who book last minute can get incredible discounts.

However, they added that the ideal point for booking a European holiday is typically five months before departure – booking then could deliver a 47 per cent reduction in costs.

Although booking long-haul flights six months in advance can save travelers a whopping 54% off regular prices.

How can I reschedule my flight?

If you booked a very expensive flight, you still have the chance to protect your wallet by rebooking for a cheaper option. See how:

  • Keep an eye on fares after you book your flight – you can use price alert trackers for updates.
  • Browse Google Flights or airline websites, considering different dates and airlines.
  • When you detect a drop in rates, take advantage of the opportunity.
  • Go through the rebooking process – ensuring you can cancel and rebook when necessary to maximize savings.
  • Consider canceling your entire reservation for greater savings and flexibility.
