A TRAVEL expert has revealed the annoying reason why you should always queue to board a plane as quickly as possible.

Many people like to eat and drink before taking a leisurely stroll to the departure lounge, but some passengers in particular insist on being the first to arrive at the gate.

Travel writer Ben Groundwater has officially called himself one of these people, but insists it’s for a very good and logical reason.

With flights, accommodation and everything else already costing an arm and a leg these days, the last thing people want is to pay extra for something they don’t think they need.

The cost of paying for checked baggage, combined with the fact that some people simply don’t trust airlines with their belongings, means that more people rely solely on carry-on luggage for their trips.

However, it is increasingly common to see almost everyone on the same flight bringing some type of hand luggage with them.

And so, with space at a premium, passengers are left fighting among themselves for space for hand luggage.

For this reason, Groundwater admits that it is vital to board as early as possible to guarantee some space in the overhead compartments.

He said, through Thing: “Sometimes I hear people complaining about all the passengers struggling to line up well before boarding is announced.

“’You have a reserved seat,’ they murmur, ‘no need to be the first person in.’

“But what they don’t recognize is that you can have a reserved seat, but you don’t have space reserved for carry-on luggage.

“And if you’re one of the last to get on the plane and you have a rolling suitcase that needs to go in the overhead bin, you’re going to have a hard time.”

Fighting for a place to put your carry-on luggage is just one of the stresses of boarding a plane, which makes it one of modern flying’s problems.

Whether it’s other passengers passing in front of you or someone taking up all the available space with their belongings, there never seems to be enough space in those overhead lockers.

But people insist on refusing to pay for checked luggage to save money and avoid the increasing risk of their luggage being “lost.”

It allows you to save time both on departure, where you don’t have to queue at baggage check-in, and on arrival at your destination, where you can go straight through baggage claim.

“That’s why I do this,” Groundwater said.

Of course, there are ways to secure space in upper cabinets, although there is no real strategy for doing so.

The best way is to be in an early boarding group, which usually means having a more premium ticket and frequent flyer status with the airline.
