Can I take food through airport security?

Some people may prefer to bring their own food to the airport due to inflated prices once they get there.

Cakes, sandwiches, fruit, vegetables and all other completely solid foods can be taken through UK airport security.

However, there are several items that you need to treat as liquids.

For example, jars of jam, hummus, syrups, honey and guacamole should be in 100ml containers or containers.

They must also fit into a single transparent, reusable plastic bag, which holds no more than one liter and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm.

However, there are some exceptions, for example, if you take the hummus out of the pan and spread it on a slice of bread, it would be considered acceptable to pass the security check.

Jars of olives and cucumbers also count as liquids – even though they are mostly solids – because they contain a considerable amount of juice.

Canned items, such as tuna, are also prohibited as they exceed 100ml and contain liquid.

This also means that sauces, yogurt, vinegar and oil are banned if they exceed 100ml.

But sweets like caramel or liquid-filled chocolates are allowed – but they must also fit in your reusable plastic liquid bag, along with all other liquids.

Hard cheese is good in carry-on luggage, but soft cheese has to go in the hold.

Soup also counts as liquid.

The general rule when taking food through airport security is to take it in your hand luggage, as in most cases it will cause problems with the x-ray machine.

This can cause delays and you having to empty all of your carry-on luggage.

It’s also worth checking if you have US customs pre-clearance – where US customs are stationed at UK airports – if you’re traveling to the US.

Some travelers complained that they were forced to abandon items such as ham sandwiches because they did not comply with U.S. customs laws.

Just remember that airport security reserves the right to confiscate anything they deem dangerous, even if the item in question technically falls within the rules.

Can I take drinks through airport security?

All liquids must be less than 100ml at airport security or they will be confiscated.

This rule has been in force since 2006.

Liquids in containers larger than 100ml generally cannot pass through security, even when the container is only partially full.

There are some exemptions, including items needed for essential medical purposes and any dietary requirements.

After passing through security, you can purchase drinks in the boarding area to board the plane.

You can also take an empty water bottle through security and refill it at a water fountain.

If you buy a bottle of sparkling wine or other alcoholic drink over 100ml at the airport, there is no problem taking it on board as it will be sealed in your airport bag.

However, you should not open the security bag until you reach your final destination.

In November 2022, it was revealed that the 100ml restriction will be lifted by the end of 2024.

The new rules will allow drinks, makeup and liquids up to two liters to be transported in hand luggage.

It is worth noting that there are exceptions to the rules, with government website stating that you can take liquid containers with a volume greater than 100ml if they are for essential medical purposes, for special dietary needs or if they contain baby food or milk.

Can I take baby food through airport security?

If your child is two years old or younger, you can take a few items in your carry-on luggage, including baby milk and sterilized water – the total amount needed for the entire trip.

Expressed breast milk can be ingested in unlimited quantities, as long as it is in individual packages of no more than two liters, and baby food in liquid, gel or paste form is also suitable.

The new net rules explained

The Sun’s head of travel, Lisa Minot, explained how the new scanners will change the way Brits travel through UK airports.

She said: “The new generation of CT scanners will be a huge boost for passengers departing from UK airports.

“Laptops and other electronic devices can stay in your luggage and there is no need to follow the current 100ml liquid restriction that has been in place for 18 years.

“You can carry up to two liters of liquids without having to remove them from your hand luggage.

“But the scanners are a huge logistical nightmare for airports who have to install the new machines while still processing large numbers of passengers through the old ones.

“But it is important to keep in mind that not all airports in the world have the equipment.

“You may well be able to fly with liquids over 100ml – but if the airport you’re returning home from doesn’t already have them, you could end up losing control.

“As we transition over the next few years, you will need to make sure you are aware of the preparations at any airport you fly through.”
