WestJ.and Airlinesa low-cost travel option outside of Canada, announced an “ultra basic” airfare.

While it includes almost all the amenities of regular economy, one missing piece has irked travelers.

The airline sent an email informing its customers about the change, which upset many.

“@WestJet horrible email to send about #UltraBasic fare,” one wrote in X.

“Implemented today, on rates that I already purchased without knowing this information. Bad form.

“Punishing the ‘guests’ – that’s what you called your customers.

“So mad about it. No carry-on luggage, back of the plane, brutal.”

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

WestJet’s new UltraBasic fare is the basic cabin, but without carry-on luggage included.

Travelers who purchased their basic ticket by June 3, 2024 will still be able to bring carry-on luggage, according to the website.

John Weatherill, WestJet group commercial director, explained the change in a statement.

“At WestJet, we take our responsibility to provide affordable air travel to Canadians very seriously, and our track record in doing so is unparalleled,” he said.

“As the airline that democratized low-cost air travel in Canada, real ticket prices fell by about half in the two decades following WestJet’s first flight.

“[Thus] allowing twice as many Canadians to travel by air.

“There are few industries that can claim such price reductions over three decades, and we are very proud of the role we have played in making air travel affordable.”

Weatherhill also highlighted that the change will make flying more affordable.

“We are committed to the affordability of air travel and UltraBasic is an innovative, cost-effective solution that strengthens WestJet’s ability to offer guests affordable airfares to more destinations,” he said.

“With UltraBasic, guests can customize a travel experience that meets their needs, without paying for additional services they take for granted.

“We are delivering on our promise of low fares and believe UltraBasic will give more Canadians the opportunity to fly.”

UltraBasic flights will include a personal item that must be stored in the seat in front of you. They will also be assigned to the rear of the aircraft.

There are options to add checked baggage, seat selection, and other benefits for additional fees.
