Americans want more adventure in life, but are afraid of bugs and wildlife – top three must-see destinations revealed

ALMOST three in five Americans (58%) would like to be more adventurous, new research suggests.

A survey of 2,000 American adults revealed that 41% of Americans have a list of adventures or a series of adventures they would like to go on or places they would like to visit.

And if all goes according to plan, the Americans plan to cross off every item on their adventure list by the time they turn 56.

In fact, a surprising 25% of Americans surveyed are interested in climbing a mountain range, despite only 11% indicating they have the skills and knowledge to do so.

And nearly a third (32%) plan to visit a National Park in 2024. Of these, Yellowstone (39%), the Grand Canyon (38%), and the Great Smoky Mountains (28%) were ranked as the top three must-see places. -see destinations.

Conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Mountain Housethe study found that more than six in ten (62%) reported that they want to spend more time outdoors than they currently do.

TRAVELERS’ MAIN CONCERNS

So what’s stopping them? The top concerns were things like bugs and pests (56%), encountering wild animals (40%), getting lost (36%), needing a bathroom (35%), and running out of food (19%) and water (34% ) .

To overcome their fears and get out of their comfort zone, respondents would be more willing to try camping (35%), fishing (32%), hiking (26%) and traveling by car (25%).

The survey also divided respondents into categories based on their adventure level and found several key differences between the groups.

According to the results, 11% consider themselves “experienced adventurers” or those who venture outdoors several times a month.

These experienced adventurers spend an average of 18 days per month outdoors and tend to enjoy camping (55%), hiking (52%), and hunting (24%) more compared to other adventurers.

Others fall into the “average adventurer” category (16%), who explore about once a month.

Compared to others, these Americans love looking at the stars (66%) and are more likely to say they feel peaceful when they are outdoors (70%).

Interestingly, a third of respondents say they align with the archetype of the “social adventurer” who occasionally gets outdoors with friends and family.

Almost one in five (19%) consider themselves an “indoor cat” and prefer to avoid the outdoors entirely.

A quarter of Baby Boomers selected this category, more than any other generation.

“Social adventurers” and “indoor cats” of all ages are more likely to worry about finding a bathroom during an outdoor adventure (27% and 31%), as well as worry about crossing paths with wildlife (20% and 21%). %).

WHAT IS AN ADVENTURER?

The survey also sought to define an adventurer and found that being someone who loves outdoor activities (63%), is curious (44%) and has a lot of energy (40%) are necessary characteristics.

And when it comes time to eat something, adventurers of all types and experience levels prefer to have a meal where they cook food over a fire (38%), eat meals that require as little cooking as possible (30%), or even eat meals that require as little cleaning as possible (29%).

“Planning snacks and meals is at the top of the priority list for 35% of Americans when preparing for outdoor adventures,” notes Jim Cohen, CEO of Mountain House.

“Knowing you have a hot, delicious and convenient meal to enjoy at the end of the day gives you time to do the activities you love, spend less time cooking and feel that sense of comfort – whether you’re a seasoned outdoor veteran or a social adventurer.”

Looking deeper into outdoor adventures, more than nine in ten respondents (94%) find time to connect with nature and get outside regularly.

In fact, 40% of respondents spend more time outdoors today than they did five years ago.

Research methodology:

This randomized, double-opt-in survey of 2,000 Americans in the general population was commissioned by Mountain House in between 1st May It is May 6, 2024.

Investigating how time outdoors influences travel adventures, a quarter would like to see more of the United States (39%) and 35% are eager to see more of the rest of the world.

Regardless of where they go, the most important factors for adventure travel include the weather at the destination (39%), the activities you can do (34%), and the people you travel with (33%).

Cohen continues: “It’s exciting to see how Americans have increased the time they spend outside the home over the past five years and are finding opportunities to customize the experience to their needs. Whether you’re a stargazer, a rock climber, a kayaker or a leisurely hiker, the outdoors offers an opportunity to relax and explore.”
