The group has blocked apps that offer free, unlicensed VoiP calls and censors any content that goes against Islamic morality or includes drugs, nudity, gambling or anti-government sentiments.
There are only two internet providers in the UAE and one is owned by the government and the other has connections with it.
Therefore, any use of the Internet is monitored by the government.
As a result of the ban, residents typically have to use paid services from one of the country’s state-owned telecommunications providers.
There is currently no clear signal as to whether or when the ban might be lifted.
What should I use instead of WhatsApp in Dubai?
Although there are several apps and functions blocked in Dubai, there are many alternative options that can be accessed.
The UAE government prefers users to use their own apps that allow video and audio calls – one of which is BOTIM.
It offers services similar to WhatsApp, including video calls, use of emojis and photo sharing options.
The disadvantage of apps created in the UAE is that the government can monitor your use on them.
Dubai’s leadership has even said in the past that people can only use licensed services like BOTIM, without explaining the real reasons.
