VISITOR VISA

According to CNN TravelBrazil will implement its new visa program starting next year.

Under new rules expected to come into force in 2025, travelers from the US, Canada and Australia will have to not only share bank statements but also pay for a visa.

Just as the European Union postponed its ETIAS program, which would have required visitors from most non-EU countries to obtain pre-travel authorization, Brazil also originally suspended the new visa system.

But all bets showing bank accounts will be back soon.

Still, there will be some cases where obtaining entry will be easier.

Those traveling for tourism or cruises will be able to apply for an electronic visa instead of visiting a consulate.

The total cost of the visa will be US$80.90, but it will last for a decade.

The visa will be valid for multiple entries.

Stays will also be limited to 90 days per year.

The visa requirement is nothing new, however.

NOTHING NEW

Instead, North American travelers who wanted to travel to Brazil before 2019 were forced to obtain visas in order to enter.

As reported by Tampa Bays News Channel 8former president Jair Bolsonaro initially withdrew the demand to boost the tourism industry.

Meanwhile, e-visas were introduced just a year before the prerequisite was completely abolished.

Bolsonaro’s predecessor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, decided to reintroduce the requirement to maintain reciprocity between countries.

According to Brazilian government websitea letter of intent will also be required.

This letter should detail your travel dates and planned details of your stay, such as accommodation.

FUNDS BEFORE FUN

In addition to presenting proof of residence in the USA, return tickets to Brazil or a signed return statement and income will also be required.

This means that visitors will have to present the last three current or savings account statements – or the last six payment receipts.

To be granted entry, travelers will also need to present at least US$2,000 in their account.

Those who cannot meet these requirements will need a sponsor to sign them and show their finances.

GO TWO WAYS

The system is also not a one-way street.

Brazilians traveling to the US should be prepared to schedule a visa appointment at the nearest embassy.

They will also have to prove that they have the financial means to pay for the trip and will need a visa that will cost US$185.

This is almost double the fee that Americans will be required to pay when entering Brazil.

Brazil’s visa system processing time will take approximately five business days.

Still, the company responsible for the applications, known as VFS, “strongly recommends” that travelers apply two months before their departure date.

Americans are the second largest group of visitors to the country, after Argentines, according to Travel Pulse.
