A flight attendant has revealed the real reason why crew greet passengers when they board the aircraft – and why they might stop you.

The inside information was shared by Beth Bourneuf, a former teacher who became a flight attendant in 2020.

She explained how the crew will be at the entrance of the plane for a secret reason.

The goal is to identify able-bodied passengers, also known as ABPs, who can help in an emergency.

“We look to see how many bags people carry and we also have to be conscious of the type of bags they carry,” Bourneuf said. “Anyone with a refrigerator needs to ask what’s in there.”

In a Sun Onlie Travel blog, we tell you why flight attendants need to evaluate who they think is the strongest on the plane.

The reality of being a flight attendant is that there are many more passengers than cabin crew.

And if something bad happens and we need to make an emergency landing, we’ll need some people to help us.

This may mean lifting heavy objects, if for example the cabin is cluttered, or opening the emergency doors, which are also quite heavy.

So, as passengers board, I will ask the fittest and strongest to look at their boarding passes, as if I just want to send them in the right direction.

However, I will note where they are sitting so I know who to turn to if I need emergency assistance.

So if someone asks to see your boarding pass when you get on the plane, they may be marking you as a potentially helpful person should there be a crisis.

The revelation was made as part of a series of flying myths debunked.

Others included the idea that dressing well will give you an upgrade.

Flight attendant Vinia DiGeronimo said: “Airlines have rigid systems for upgrades and flight attendants do not have the authority to hand out seat assignments.

“I know if I updated someone out of order and didn’t follow [upgrade] list, I would have a lot of problems.”

“There are times when people who actually pay for economy plus call the airline and ask for a refund because they saw people being flown for free,” said Amber, who has been a flight attendant for eight years.

Everything you need to know before boarding a plane

“And we could get fired for it,” she added.

It turns out tourists were warned about a simple mistake at the hotel that could see them receive a hefty fine.

Failing to remember this simple rule could leave you hundreds of pounds out of pocket – even if it’s not your fault.

Smoking cigarettes may seem glamorous in movies, but it has become a generally destructive social habit in real life.

Some of this is due to the true health risks involved in smoking, and the rest is due to the smell of cigarette smoke, which is nearly impossible to get rid of.

This is why hotels have strict restrictions on smoking in their rooms.

Even if a smoker opens a hotel room window, the smell of cigarette smoke can linger on curtains, sheets, carpets and other materials.
