Potter also recommends only using carry-on bags if possible, as bags are often heavy and priced accordingly.

Many airlines even allow free carry-on luggage for all your personal belongings on the flight.

But for airlines that don’t provide free baggage, Potter’s tip could be vital.

He says passengers should use the baggage cost calculator provided by many airlines to find out how much any extra baggage will cost – but always do this before purchasing a plane ticket.

Knowing the weight of your luggage means you can adjust your ticket type to suit your luggage needs.

Paying for almost everything costs a lot more at the airport compared to the weeks before your trip, so deciding on your baggage allowance before your flight makes it as cheap as possible.

Potter told Washington Post: “Adding it to your ticket at checkout will always be the cheapest time to do this.

“On some airlines, paying at the airport to check or transport a bag can cost more than US$75.

“In some cases, it’s quite disgusting to pay for that bag at the airport.

“You have to do the mental math when booking your flight.”

You could pack for a family of four using just carry-on luggage under the seat

It turns out that one travel guru has issued a warning to tourists looking to pack their bags to the brim this summer.

The expert revealed which items to “never put in your bag”, regardless of the duration of the flight.

He warned tourists against packing common holiday essentials such as adapters, sunscreen, contact lenses and medicines in checked luggage.

How airport bosses have finally explained why luggage is delayed more often during warmer weather.

Authorities have revealed that “safety protocols” can mean it takes longer to unload your bags when the mercury reaches 30C.

Another suitcase hack posted online came from radio presenter Catherine Duranceau, who says she travels with a “fragile” sticker on her belongings.

The media personality claims this means chargers will place it above others to prevent them from being damaged, meaning it will also be discharged first.

Three Travel Tricks to Save Money

READY to escape the dreary weather? Here are some tips to save money

TIME TO FLY: Always use a flight comparison website, such as fly-scanner.com or kayak.co.uk, which will look for the cheapest operator on your chosen route.

Airlines release tickets up to a year in advance and, generally, the earlier you book, the cheaper the flights are.

This is especially true if you plan to fly during peak periods, like summer holidays.

FLEXIBLE WINS: You’ll be able to find the best deals if you can be flexible on your destination or travel dates.

Flying midweek tends to be the cheapest, while Fridays and Sundays tend to be the most expensive.

If you’ve set dates in mind, try Skyscanner’s “Everywhere” search tool, which will show you the cheapest destinations available at those times.

PACKAGING: You can generally save money by opting for an all-inclusive deal rather than booking flights and hotels separately, according to research from consumer group Which?.

However, it depends on the destination, so it’s worth doing your research.

Spain was found to be cheaper all-inclusive, but you would be better off taking a DIY holiday to the Algarve in Portugal.
