The Venetian Court, a historic landmark in Capitola, California, claims to be the state’s “first and oldest oceanfront resort,” according to SFGate.

Situated on the Pacific Ocean east of Santa Cruz, it looks like a scene straight out of Italy.

The colorful houses are impressive and have been around for a century.

The area served as a summer camp in the late 1800s before developing into the resort town it is today.

COLORFUL HISTORY

The city was initially described as the “Small City Under Canvas”, according to the Capitol Museum.

German native Frederick Hihn came to Capitola during the California Gold Rush.

Although the origins of the city’s name are not certain, it is speculated that his daughter Lulu chose the name Capitola in honor of the heroine of a popular novel of the time.

The city was later sold to Henry Allen Rispin of San Francisco, who invested in it until his bankruptcy in 1929.

Most of the homes have been privately owned for decades and serve as vacation rentals, SFGate reported.
