From using a desktop computer to plan a vacation to overspending on airplane seats, Lauren Bell outlined the five mistakes you should never make when booking your next trip.

DO NOT CHECK MOBILE PRICES FOR HOTELS

Always compare hotel prices on your computer and your mobile device so you don’t miss out on good deals, Lauren said.

For example, she discovered an apartment in Amsterdam that was £270 cheaper on Booking.commobile app than on your website.

Similarly, she saved almost £100 on a weekend in Florence using an exclusive Expedia mobile phone.

NOT COMPARING AIRLINE COSTS

Booking a flight through an online travel agent without directly comparing airline costs could be a rookie mistake, according to the travel expert.

Online travel agents (OTAs) may seem cheaper initially, often appearing at the top of search results on comparison sites.

But they often inflate prices for add-ons like bags and seat selection.

In many cases, booking directly with the airline can be more economical once these extras are included.

Always compare the two options to ensure you are getting the best deal.

OBTAINING EXCESS INSURANCE FROM THE CAR RENTAL COMPANY

Car rental companies typically offer less comprehensive and more expensive excess insurance compared to third-party providers.

Search of Which? shows that booking a third-party policy in advance could save you up to £183.

Buy excess insurance for your car rental before your trip to avoid high costs and sales pressure at the car rental counter.

Depending on the airline, you may also not need to pay extra to sit with your companion.

PAYING TO SIT WITH COMPANIONS ON A PLANE

Most airlines, such as British Airways and Jet2, do not separate groups that do not pay to sit together unless there is no other option, the expert said.

However, airlines like Wizz Air and Ryanair are more likely to separate you from your traveling companions unless you pay for reserved seats.

Therefore, it is always a good idea to consider your airline’s policies before deciding to pay extra for reserved seats.

EXCHANGE MONEY AT THE AIRPORT

Airport exchange rates are notoriously low because they capitalize on the convenience factor.

Instead, exchange your money on the street or online before you go.

Alternatively, consider using specialist travel debit and credit cards such as Halifax Clarity and Starling, which offer competitive exchange rates with no additional fees.

This can be a more economical way to manage your expenses abroad.

By following these tips, you can avoid common pitfalls and ensure you get the best value for your money on your next vacation.
