An ocean-loving couple decided to use baby names inspired by a fish.

While some parents like to use more traditional names, others prefer a unique choice, whether it’s a different spelling or a completely unusual name — and this pair belongs to the latter category.

The couple are avid divers and made sure to name their baby in a way that shows their great love for the ocean and swimming.

But while other ocean lovers may have chosen more familiar options, for example Coral, Sandy or Disney’s Ariel, diving enthusiasts were inspired by a fish they both love.

The bizarre nickname is Tuna – and has since led people to believe that the Sardine event may have been a better choice.

Taking to Reddit, a shocked user wrote: “Tuna. They named their son Atum. […]

”My God, they named their daughter after a fish because check grades teach diving and enjoy the ocean.”

The dubious moniker soon sparked fierce debate on the popular platform, as other Redditors expressed fears for baby Tuna once the girl starts attending school.

One person tagged the pick, writing: “This is just cruel, there are thousands of names related to marine biology that would be great.”

Another agreed, adding: “My son is a certified dive master. He recently even obtained a cave rescue and recovery certificate, as cave diving is his specialty.

“I would be upset if he decided to give my grandson a name like that.

”There are so many decent sea nymph names. Eudora. Melia. Calypso. Polisher. Theia.

”So there are only names with oceanic themes. Marina. Coral. But they choose fish. Face palm.”

Meanwhile, others noted that Atum was a more popular nickname in other countries around the world, such as Norway.

One said: “I know a woman called Tuna, but it’s not pronounced like you might think, she’s Norwegian and it sounds more like Too-nay.

Are unique baby names worth it?

The Fabulous deputy editor reveals the turmoil she faced with her own name growing up.

When I was a kid, all I wanted was one of those personalized keychains with my name on it.

But no joy, the closest I could find was Rosie, Joseph (not very good for a girl) and Joanne.

Josie is short for Josephine, which is a French name, and I managed to reach my 20s without ever meeting anyone who shared it.

When I try to introduce myself to people, I get all sorts of random things – like Tracey and Stacey – which can be really annoying.

Although I’ve come into contact with a few Josies over the past year – there seem to be a few of us around my age – it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends.

Overall I don’t mind it, at least it’s not rude or poorly written.

And that means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just referring to myself as Josie.

I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my surname, as it’s not seen as very cool or feminist to do so these days, but I explain to them that I’m not as attached to Griffiths as I always said’ hi, it’s Josie’ when calling a friend.

I think it’s good to be unique and I will definitely try to replicate that when naming my own children.

It’s the rude names you have to watch out for, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist, I’ll definitely avoid them.

” A fourth suggested: “Are you sure that’s why they did it? It’s a Turkish name.”

The author of the post clarified that this was not the case, confirming: “Someone asked if it was Tina’s nickname and the answer was ‘(husband) and I are diving instructors, we love the ocean and the tuna is delicious. beautiful fish!'”

But the girl is not the only Tuna in the world – in 2019, a woman named Kunt Tunaoriginally from Türkiye, spoke about her nickname “incredible icebreaker”.

When launching a candidacy for student union leader at his London university, Tuna came up with the ultimate slogan: “Tuna in your sandwich. Tuna in your salad. Tuna in your union.”

The student has also spoken about her somewhat strange surname, saying that she is “used to jokes”.

She wrote, “Follow me as I try to maintain my calm/elegance/humor while responding to tuna kunt’s jokes.

“Thanks for laughing at me – it was an amazing icebreaker and conversation starter!

“Now I’m going to make some tuna pasta and relax until the results party!”
